How to connect a PTZ camera to a computer

PTZ cameras can be connected to a Windows computer through a serial connection or an IP network, depending on the camera type and supported control protocol.

Connect an Analog PTZ Camera

Many traditional PTZ cameras use RS-232, RS-485, or RS-422 for PTZ control.

If the computer does not have the required serial interface, you can use a USB-to-serial converter or an Ethernet-to-serial converter.

A typical connection may look like:

Computer → USB/Serial Converter → RS-485/RS-422 → PTZ Camera

After the hardware is connected, configure PTZ Controller with the correct COM port, camera address, baud rate, and control protocol.

Connect a Network PTZ Camera

For an IP/network PTZ camera, connect the camera and computer to the same network.

PTZ Controller communicates with supported network cameras using the camera’s IP address and supported control protocol, such as ONVIF or other supported network protocols.

The exact configuration depends on the camera model and its protocol implementation.

Test Your Camera

PTZ camera models and protocol implementations vary between manufacturers. A supported protocol does not necessarily guarantee compatibility with every camera model or configuration.

We recommend downloading the 30-day trial of PTZ Controller and testing it with your actual camera and connection hardware before purchasing.
